Connecting To The Month Of Awareness

This month is about becoming aware of how you define yourself. I have been editing my first book Feed your Body, Feed your Soul which will be out this month in e-book and and came across a section about a friend who was going through a major transition in his life. What happens when your life circumstances change?

Your children have grown up, you may be in a career transition, retiring or even moving to a different city, leaving the familiar behind. What if the majority of your life revolved around your kids or you worked as a teacher for 30 years and now you are retired.

Maybe its time to think outside your box, the parameters you have set for youself by how you define yourself. Start creating a life for yourself without those self-imposed limiting adjectives. Our identity is often tied into our job, the company we work for or our role in a family. We are not an assembly technition, secretary or a vice president of a corporation. These are companies and titles that reflect what we do, not who we are. We are more than just a father, mother, son, daughter or grandparent, once again these are just titles.

“Thoughts and emotions rise and fall away unceasingly. When we are thinking that we are competent or that we are hopeless, what are we basing it on? On this fleeting moment, or on
yesterday’s accomplishment or failure? When we cling to a fixed idea of who we are, it cripples us. Nothing and no one is fixed.”
- Pema Chodron

So who are you?

We are continuously evolving, changing and maturing as our life’s events sharpen our focus by changing our landscape and helping us uncover and discover who we are at our core. As things around you change you may need to re-evaluate your percpetion of who you are and what you want.

Take the next 5 - 10 minutes to think about the words you use to define yourself. Maybe even write them down.

With father's day around the corner, we decided to dedicate this newsletter to Men's health and awareness. We often don't think about men having hormonal shifts but they do, it is just more subtle.

Men’s Health: Reducing Your Toxic Load

Written by Natalia Hnatiw

What are some things that can be harmful to the male body and what can be done to avoid them, to optimize overall health and wellbeing? We have included in our newsletter the documentary “The Disappearing Male,” to illustrate the connection between environmental toxins and male health issues that are rarely addressed.

To put things into perspective, the chemical industry is only 100 years old but poses an alarming problem to men’s health and a toxic threat to the male reproductive system.  In the last few decades there has been a steady increase in chemically derived products that contain potentially harmful ingredients. These “endocrine-disrupting chemicals,” or EDCs, like phthalates, parabens and sulfates, are all too common in many everyday products, and have been shown to directly impair sperm function and affect fertility.

Male Menopause?

Written by Ara Wiseman

Did you know that men go though menopause? It’s called andropause and I know a lot women reading this are smiling, so let me explain. Andropause is caused by low testosterone and high levels of estrogen, insulin and cortisol (our stress hormone).

We all know that hormonal changes are a natural part of aging. With men the changes can include decreased sexual function, increased belly fat, decreased energy levels and mood swings, but because they happen slowly over time, they often go unnoticed.

According to the Mayo Clinic, men tend to be less aware of their subtle body changes, because hormones tend to decline slower for men. Also men don’t talk about what they are experiencing, at least not as freely as most women do, they just learn to live with mood changes and weight gain.

The Disappearing Male

The last few decades have seen steady and dramatic increases in the incidence of boys and young men suffering from genital deformities, low sperm count, sperm abnormalities and testicular cancer.
At the same time, boys are now far more at risk of suffering from ADHD, autism, Tourette's syndrome, cerebral palsy, and dyslexia.

The Disappearing Male takes a close and disturbing look at what many doctors and researchers now suspect are responsible for many of these problems: a class of common chemicals that are ubiquitous in our world.

Found in everything from shampoo, sunglasses, meat and dairy products, carpet, cosmetics and baby bottles, they are called "hormone mimicking" or "endocrine disrupting" chemicals and they may be starting to damage the most basic building blocks of human development.

A Smoother You

My new book on cellulite will be released in the next couple of months! I have been doing extensive research and I am so excited to share it with you.

The book explains how the condition of our skin is a reflection of what is happening in our bodies at the cellular level. The way you have lived your life up until now and the accumulation of all the things you have done, is reflected in the condition of your skin. Our thoughts and perceptions of the things that occur in our day to day lives, plays the biggest role in our stress level and in how we feel. Stress affects our hormones and our hormones affect the condition of our skin. All of our thoughts affect us on the cellular level because when we are thinking, our cells are listening.

The good news is that you can always turn things around and improve the condition of your skin. Your body is infinitely forgiving and renewable and is contiuously striving for balance. It is never too late to renew both your mind and body with healthy stategies.

A smoother you is your comprehensive companion on the road to healthier living, and will help you look and feel better inside and out!
